ROCKY MOUNTIAN NATIONAL PARK
Grand Lake is bordered on three sides by one of the nation's oldest national parks. Activities in the park include hiking, horseback riding, fishing, wildlife viewing, photography and anything else that involves mountains, tundra, trees or streams.
Try taking a drive over Trail Ridge Road, the nation's highest continuous paved highway. Go in the early morning or around dusk when the greatest amount of wildlife is visible. Check out the Kawuneeche Visitor's Center for an introduction to the park and surrounding wildlife.

FISHING
There are over 50 lakes and many streams where you can fish. Anglers of all types and all skill levels have plenty to choose from in the Grand Lake area. Five species of trout provide the bulk of fishing available: the native cutthroat, rainbows, browns, brooks and lake trout. Fly-fishing is at its best on the Colorado and its tributaries. Grand Lake and its sister reservoirs, Granby and Shadow Mountain, are popular for Mackinaws and Kokanee Salmon. Sport fishing is also permitted in Rocky Mountain National Park and a Colorado fishing license is required. Check out the Fishing page for more detail on the lakes, streams, and regulations.
WILDLIFE WATCHING
Whether it be Bighorn, Elk, Mule Deer, or other wildlife, Rocky visitors have a passion for viewing wild animals, especially the big ones. A winter elk herd numbering between 200-600, about 350 bighorn sheep, and numerous mule deer call the park home. The park's great large-animal population makes it one of the country's top wildlife watching destinations. Here at Rocky you can find 60 species of mammals, 280 recorded bird species, 11 species of fish, and countless insects, including a surprisingly large number of butterflies.
